New Interview!
I was recently interviewed by Michael Bange in St. Louis for his blogĀ Notes from the Purple Ape Studios. We talked about my musical roots, background, influences, advice for those starting out, and more interesting tidbits. I think it came out well and is a great read. Blues In Britain!
Erin & Neil Harpe: Delta Blues Duets (Juicy juju)
Daughter and father duo Erin and Neil Harpe boast a back catalogue of collective achievements as to be the envy of any blues household. Neil Harpeās first recordings date back 1972 but his true passion and āday jobā is that of collecting and restoring vintage acoustic guitars, especially the niche brands such as Stella and Galiano that were used by the early blues pioneers like Charlie Patton and Willie Brown, becoming an authority on such instruments. Surrounded by such music, it was inevitable that Erin would succumb to the blues, which she has done in a big way and, along with her band The Delta Swingers, has collected many awards and accolades (particularly in her Boston/New England region) in addition to opening for Buddy Guy, James Cotton and ZZ Top.
First released in 2008 but due reappraisal, this set opens with āBye Bye Bluesā, a song written early in the 20th century by āRagtimeā Henry Thomas. This pretty much sets the tone: two acoustic guitars interweaving, along with cleverly arranged vocal harmonies. āCalled You This Morninā sees the duo alternate verses, Erin takes the lead for Memphis Minnieās āChauffeur Bluesā, āKokomo Bluesā again has Erin to the fore on the Mississippi Fred McDowell number, with deft resonator slides decorating the piece. āFishin' Bluesā sees the pair return to the works of āRagtimeā Henry Thomas, featuring lovely harmonies over the chorus. āIn My Girlish Daysā sports a set of lyrics containing lots of ādown homeā references much loved of early blues artists: similarly āMississippi Delta Bluesā nails that familiar acoustic blues style on this Willie Brown number. And thereās the much-covered āNobody Loves You When You're Down and Outā, the Mississippi Sheiksā āStop and Listen Bluesā and a closing take on Lonnie Johnsonās āWinnie The Wailerā.
If youāre a fan of acoustic blues then youāll find this a faultless set of classic songs, nicely sung and matched with equally ornate accompaniment that stays faithful to the original versions. Easier on the ear than those old 78s.
